Hello there, math detectives. Boy, am I glad you showed up—I’ve got a real pickle on my hands! My latest case took place at the local elementary school. I arrived at the scene and was immediately swept down the halls and into cafeteria chaos.

A group of students sat at a lunch table staring unhappily at their trays “YUCK!” cried Matilda, making a face at the slice of pizza in front of her. “I can’t stand pepperoni!”
“Don’t look at me,” pouted Raul. “I hate any food with cheese on it.” At that, he pushed away his cheeseburger. “Hey, anybody want these chicken wings?” asked Khaley. “I don’t like anything with meat in it.” Mike scooped up a spoonful of his yogurt and grumbled, “Everybody knows I’m allergic to this stuff.” “Well, yogurt is the only thing I like on the menu,”
replied Tonya. “And there’s no way I’m going to eat THIS!” At that, she poked her salad with a fork. This was definitely a case for the Math Maven! “Hi, folks,” I said to the hungry bunch. “Looks like you’re all unhappy with your lunch.” “It’s the new cafeteria lady, Ms. Maxy Mix-up,” said Matilda. “She’s mixed up all our favourite lunches and we’re having trouble sorting it out.” “Don’t worry,” I said. “My math detectives are here to help get the orders straight.”

OK, super sleuths! Time to untangle this lunchtime knot. Each student has a favourite food. No two students share the same favourite. Your job is to match the student with his or her favourite food. You may want to make a chart to help organize the information.

Mystery at the Third Strike Sports Store
Greetings, detectives! Today around lunchtime, I stopped by the Third Strike Sports Store to buy a new fishing pole. I like to shop at Third Strike because the owner, Nathaniel Thatcher the 3rd, loves the number 3—and, as you know, I love numbers too! I always make a point to stop there on the third day of the month because that’s the day Nathaniel holds the Third Strike contest: the third customer to buy something wins a prize—three sports balls of their choice. Well, today is the third day of the month, and I was hoping to win! “Hi, Nathaniel,” I said, entering the store. “I need a new fishing rod and reel. By the way, did I win the
Third Strike contest?” I asked hopefully “Oh, drat!” he exclaimed. “Today’s the third day of
the month? I was so busy this morning, the contest completely slipped my mind. Oh no, I’m sure I’ve had more than three customers today. And I’d hate to gyp lucky customer #3 out of the prize!” “Well, can you remember who the last customer before me was?” “Hmmm, I do remember the last customer! It was a woman with a bright red jacket with a big diamond on the back. She bought three softballs.” “I know that woman,” I replied. “That must have
been Sally Swing, the star softball pitcher. Keep thinking, Nathaniel. Who else came in?”
“Well, my best friend, Tim Tackle, stopped in for three footballs this morning,” Nathaniel recalled. “And a very tall man came in before Tim. He bought three basketballs.” “That must have been Dexter Dunk. He’s a local basketball star,” I replied. “Can you remember anyone else?” “Wait,” he murmured, rubbing his chin. Suddenly he said, “Yes, a woman came in right after Dexter—she passed him on his way out. She was a blonde woman . . . bought three tennis balls.” “Did she have really long hair?” I asked “Why, yes she did, Math Maven. I can’t believe you know her too!” laughed Nathaniel. “Oh, I know just about everyone in Point Logos,” I answered. “That was Annie Ace. She lives right next to the public tennis courts. Can you remember any other customers?” “Hold on, Math Maven. Now I remember!”
exclaimed Nathaniel. “A man with really big muscles came in and bought three barbells.”
“That must have been Ivan the Ironman. He runs the new gym,” I explained. “He used to be a champion weight lifter.” “Well, I bet Ivan could lift a truck with one arm!” he said. “Come to think of it, Ivan must have come in after Tim, because I wanted to ask Tim about him the next time I saw him.” “Do you remember any other customers?” I asked “No, I’m sure that’s all of them,” he said with a nod. “Good for you, Nathaniel. You just solved your own mystery!” I exclaimed. “But how could I have? I still can’t remember who the third customer was!” “Don’t worry, Nathaniel, my daring detectives will come to your rescue.”

Super sleuths, now you know the five people who came into the Third Strike Sports Store. Use the clues that Nathaniel Thatcher the 3rd gave you to figure out who the winner of the Third Strike Contest is. Stop animal cruelty- bears

With bear numbers declining, there needs to be a law to stop it. There are many reasons for this: India's dancing bears, bears baiting and the making of Chinese medicine. If all of these continue there will probably be only a few left in the wild.
India's dancing bears
When tiny sloth bears are taken from the wild the Bear's mother is killed an the bear will never see the wild again. Squished in their tiny cages he bears begin their journey to Kalander village. Most of them never make it, dying from disease in the cages. And when the ones that survived get there the bears go through a lot of pain. The bears have pegs shoved in their paws and feet. Then ropes are attached to the pegs to create a 'living puppet '. Then the bears teeth are taken out to be sold as lucky charms. Out of all of the 1,200 bears that go through this, not one of them has lived past 8.
Bear baiting
Bear baiting is when a defenseless bear is attacked and killed by two dogs. A bear needs to defend itself, it also eat and drink too. In fact it's just like most creatures that have become extinct because they where hunted by humans. This needs to be stopped with law.
The making of Chinese medicine
Do you know what goes in Chinese medicine? Bile comes from bears in small cages in China. After entering the cage the bear can't move for years. So it needs to b stopped. I think that all of these things need to be banned and enforcement. India's dancing bears, bear baiting and the making of Chinese medicine are all cruelty to bears. If all of these are cruelty bears, so stop animal cruelty!

This term we are learning about the brain. This week we have had Mr.Blamey from Blackburn High School to teach us about the brain. We have had to weigh different to see what would match the same weight of brains. We also made brain jelly it tasted good. Some people didnt like the jelly. We have had lots of fun making a plastic brain and playing with the weights.Here are some pictures.

Welcome to a new year in grade 5m. Our class has made a wonderful start and we are working hard to gel together as a group.

Dragon to guard the class

This term, we did varities of things including art. We did a paper mache dragon with paint, paper, glitter, glue, card board and paper mache. First we made a creative group so all the creative people got together and spoke at each other about ideas. At last we came to an excellent idea ( well Mr. McLean got the idea) we got a card board box for a computer, cut the sharp corners, get half a box about a size of a laptop then stick the little box on the big box, get a shoe box stick it in the laptop box. We made horns out of thin cardboard and stuck them on. When we finally finished, we had the dragon mached and painted it in red paint. It looked terrific but the eyes, nostrils, scales were missing so it looked really strange. After a few days of hard work we finished the dragon. It looked very fierce so we named it,'The dragon to guard the class.'

Grade 5MC attend camp at Forest Lodge

On Tuesday 10th of March 2009, Grade 5MC attended camp at Forest Lodge Farm. The journey to the camp included a visit to Coal Creek Historical Village in Kurrumburra. This visit cooinsided with this terms topic of Australian History.

The students from our class were involved in a classroom activity from the 1800's including writing in copper plate style with ink and quill as well as travelling on the tramway. Everyone enjoyed the tour with Ian.

From Coal Creek we travelled via bus to Forest Lodge Farm. The journey took about one and half hours and all the students were very excited by the time we arrived.

Tri Skills

On the 16th of October all of the classes started Tri Skills. Garry and Dion from Tri Skills were tasked with the job of coaching us. We did different subjects each week which were designed to improve our abilities. The first subject involved controlling your landings. In these photos our subject was FUN! A lot people pulled their muscles, including us.

Basketball

Basketball is a fantastic family sport, it can be enjoyed by many different people. Basketball is played inside and outside on a court that is 28 by 15m (approx 92 by 49feet) Most courts are made by wood.

Basketball was invented by a man named Dr. James Naismith. Dr. James Naismith was born in Canada in 1861, and lived long enough to see the game he invented for the first time. The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20 1892.

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of 5 active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 foot (3m) high hoop (goal) under organized rules. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winners.

Women’s basketball began in 1892. The only essential equipment needed in basketball is a basketball a court two referees a scoreboard and a Massive Crowd. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.

Basketball has a lot of rules such as crosscourt, travel, hands foul, block, goal tending and lots more. In basketball if a player gets five fouls then they are sent off for the rest of the game. Basketball can become great job and many people get paid to play NBL or NBA (aka National Basketball America). Many People become famous by playing NBL and NBA just like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird and lots of other great players.

In basketball you have to dribble up and down the court you can not just carry it. Some of the better NBA dribblers are Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, Ray Allen and Dwayne Wade.
There are many many different teams and uniforms. Each team has a different uniform. People can buy good shoes and bad shoes. Some shoes look really cool and some just look bad and are uncomfortable.

There are different scoring opportunities like 3 pointers 2 pointers and even 1 pointer if you take a free-throw. At a basketball game it is good to have a crowd and the bigger the crowd is means the louder the stadium is. When Michael Jordan played there were always big crowds because he was a superstar.

Now to finish it off, Basketball is an amazing sport and I hope is becomes even bigger around the world.

Technology-Soft Drink Can Cars

Week 1 term 3 2008 saw the introduction of the technology subject to the grades 5 and 6. Grade 5/6Z is attempting to build cars from soft drink cans. The process involved cutting the bottom off of eight cans to form the four wheels required for the cars and the attaching these wheels to wooden skewers before inserting them inside a drinking straw and finally inside another can that formed the body of the vehicle. The finalising of construction and then testing and modifying these vehicles will conclude over the next few weeks.
